What is Integrative Medicine?

Integrative medicine is an innovative approach to healthcare that encompasses traditional Western medicine, complementary medicine, and alternative methods. It employs a holistic view of the human body, focusing not only on physical aspects but also on psychological and socio-environmental factors that contribute to health and healing. Instead of merely treating symptoms, integrative medicine aims to address the root causes of ailments and promote overall well-being.

Interventions such as change in diet, exercise, psychological therapy and supplementation are preferred to using pharmaceuticals or surgery where possible. The patient is empowered as the custodian of his or her own health. In essence, integrative medicine is not just about treating disease. It signifies a paradigm shift in healthcare philosophy, moving from a sole focus on disease management to a broader perspective emphasizing health promotion and healing.

By recognising the patient as a whole — mind, body, and spirit — integrative medicine provides more comprehensive and individualised care that truly caters to the person's unique needs and circumstances.

About Dr Darné Kritzinger

Dr Darné Kritzinger obtained her MBCHB degree from the University of Pretoria in 2013. She then completed a two-year internship training at Paarl Provincial Hospital from 2014 to 2015.

In 2016, Dr Kritzinger finished her community service at Stellenbosch Provincial Hospital. The following year, she established her own private practice, focusing on paediatric patients. From 2017 to 2019, she also worked as a locum at Paarl Provincial Paediatric Department.

Over time, Dr Kritzinger faced some health issues and found conventional medicine to be unhelpful in her healing process. This prompted her to search for answers and embark on a health journey that uncovered many truths about health and the natural provisions available for optimal well-being.

Driven by her newfound knowledge, Dr Kritzinger enrolled in Integrative Medicine Courses by Dr Bernard Brom and Dr Craig Golding. These courses played a pivotal role in changing her perspective on medicine and greatly influenced her approach to both her own health and the treatment of her patients.

As a lifelong student, she continues to explore various treatment modalities and remains enthusiastic about this new approach to medicine.
